what does the symbol means?
Answers
Answer:
THIS MEANS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL
'∝' is the symbol of proportionality. It is very commonly used in Physics to relate two different physical quantity.
Let me explain the entire concept of proportionality with the help of two examples.
Direct Proportion:
Take two quantities Fuel used (in Litres) and Speed (in km/h) of a vehicle. The more the fuel is consumed, more is the fuel consumed by the vehicle.
So we can say in this case, that Fuel consumed is directly proportional to speed of the vehicle.
If one quantity increases the other also increases.
Fuel consumed ∝ Speed of vehicle
Indirect Proportion:
Consider a situation where food is provided to a number of people in a camp.
Here, it is clear that more the number of students in the camp, lesser will be the number of days a fixed amount of food will last.
So, in this case, the number of days the food will last is inversely proportional to the number of students in the camp.
Number of days the food will last ∝ 1/Number of students
NB: Indirect Proportion is always shown as reciprocal of a quantity to another separated by the sign.
Hope the entire concept is clear to you..
