What does the term ommatidium refer to?


KSonia: Ommatidium (plural: ommatidia) these are units that make up the compound eyes of insects, millipedes and mantis shrimp. A collection of photoreceptor cell bordered by pigment cells and other support cells make up the ommatidium.

Many insects , especially Arthropods, consist of compound eyes...their eyes consist of many small pixel like units called ommatidia.
