"And both that morning equally lay in leaves
No step had trodden black.

Answer:
The traveller knew that
During the morning both roads had leaves on them (as the poem is set during autumn) and the first which was rarely travelled on had black leaves due to decay and the other road had trampled and crushed leaves due to frequent travelers. He kept the other road for some other day but he knew the road he chose won't allow that and he had further choices to make and therefore he doubted he would ever come back
