The poet here uses the word 'ships' metaphorically to indicate the people of various ages. 'Old ships' is used for old aged people whose lives are coming to an end. They return back to their homes having completed the journey of their lives just like the old ships which are sailing back to land. Whereas, the 'young ships' refer to the youth who are sailing away from their homes for various reasons. They are yet to experience the adventures and oddities of life that the old people have already experienced. They are just like' young ships' or new ships which have just set out on a voyage.
