It occurs because the moon comes in between the sun and the earth due to which the moon casts a shadow on the earth thus making it dark. A solar eclipse can occur only on a full moon day. The region of earth that falls in the moon's umbra will witness a total solar eclipse, that is, total darkness. All the places falling in the moon's penumbra will witness a partial solar eclipse, that is, partial darkness.
