  Consider a negative integer say -1. According to statement we have to multiply it even number of times (even no.s are 2,4,6,8,so on) thus multiplying -1 two or four or six times will give a positive result as we cancel the effect of minus sign by multiplying even times.

                    (-1) x (-1) = +1

Whereas multiplying -1 with odd no of times will give a negative integer. If we multiply -1 three times (odd no.) ... first two -1 will give +1 while the next -1 will make it again negative.

                  (-1) x (-1) x (-1) = -1
