What does this statement mean?

The particles of liquid absorb energy from the the surroundings to regain the energy lost during evaporation?

Does it mean - surface liquid particles evaporate and take energy from the other particles of energy to facilitate evaporation and then, the surroundings lose energy to the the water because it has lost energy?

Or am I missing something?
