Answer:
Why does overpopulation cause war? Because it is lethal and uncomfortable. If you are starving and you know you will die from starvation why not at least try to kill the neighbors and take their food? That’s the basic thinking that causes overpopulation to cause war. Of course it’s more than just starvation that can do this. Nowadays it’s also largely based on fear, fear of loss of power or wealth and then decline into starvation or other deprivation and weakness. See like a farmer anticipates his harvest leaders have to look forwards and anticipate future conditions. The fear of what the future holds may sometimes cause them to start wars that really have no good cause. More calm and prudent leaders are less likely to do this but it still can happen. Many of the richest countries on Earth also live in constant fear of current or future threats. So they also have some of the most powerful militaries on Earth to defend their wealth and secure new wealth whenever they feel the need to. An example of fear based war might be something like the “cold war” as well as the present potential for nuclear war. So far nuclear weapons have never been used defensively to defend a country’s sovereignty. They have only been used once to end World War 2 and it was used against enemy territory, not to repel invaders.
Wars related to more urgent poverty, scarcity and the immediate and dire effects of overpopulation is currently more like what we see in Africa, Syria or Afghanistan. In general in countries with high poverty and high fertility rates. These are wars where a lot of people are maybe starving or desperately poor and may be fighting each other for food, water, natural resources or other wealth.
If the world was like I described in this answer: with a much smaller population and no potential for scarcity or competition then we could achieve world peace. People might still have fear and trauma left over from a more overpopulated age and it might take generations to really get rid of that. Yet I believe it could happen. At that point the danger may actually be that we get too used to peace and too complacent. In that scenario we might be unable to respond to a serious threat, either a hostile segment of society or even an alien invasion. So realistically we should always try and maintain a healthy level of fear and preparation. Yet at the same time we need to be in a place where this is not our major cause or focus. We need balance in the way we perceive and react to the world. Healthy caution but also compassion and other qualities and methods of solving problems. Fear should not always be the first emotion that we reach for to protect us but it should always be there.

Not these days - in early civilisations war was caused by population increase - the polynesian cycles like those on Hawaii before the europeans arrived were good examplesBut since then most wars have been between states and population has only been a minor reason
