The Mahabharata contains a story. But there is a story to how that story (which is Mahabharata) was written:Sage Vyasa tells Brahma (the Creator in the Hindu Trinity of Gods) that he has composed an epic/poem based on the lives of his own descendants, that will teach posterity about Dharma (righteous living), the futility of greed, lust and anger. But the epic that Vyasa had composed in his mind was so long that he asked Brahma if he knew anyone who could write the verses down as he dictated. Brahma suggested Ganesha (the elephant headed son of Shiva) for this task. Ganesha gladly agrees to be Vyasa's scribe....under one condition. Ganesha's condition is that he must not be made to pause while writing down the verses (in other words, he wanted Vyasa to dictate the verses fast). And Vyasa laid down a counter condition that Ganesha must write down a verse ONLY after he completely understand the meaning of that verse. So, once in a while, during the process of dictation, Vyasa would compose a very complex verse (with complex vocabulary, figuratives with several shades of meaning and layers of complexity to it) so that Ganesha would pause for a few seconds to understand it....and in those few seconds, Vyasa would compose the next couple of verses in his mind. Those complex verses have not been understood by scholars even today.
