Answer:

After losing Madame Forestier's necklace, which she thought must have been very expensive, Matilda and her husband bought a necklace worth 40,000 francs at the price of 36,000 francs as a substitute for the lost necklace. This cost them a lot of money and they had borrow huge amounts of it from other people too, not knowing if they could even pay it back. They then gave this expensive necklace to Madame Frostier As they could not pay off the debt, the husband had to work for the people he borrowed from to be left off the hook. After having finally paid off the debt after 10 years, Matilda approached Madame Frostier, to tell her about the incident and how miserable their lives had been for the last 10 years. Realizing that the Necklace given to her was an expensive substitute, Madame Forestier revealed to Matilda that the necklace was made of artificial diamonds, and cost at most, 500 francs.

This comes as the dramatic twist in the story.
