What drove human beings to establish societies?
Man is a social person. He realized the need to be a part of a group. People settled near rivers and stuck to each other for fear of being invaded by other powerful groups. They lived within a marked territory and needed people to produce food.
Each aspect added to the chain and the chain remained a group. As these groups grew larger they become a society or civilization with codes of conduct, laws etc of their own. This instinct of man to bond with others and protect themselves from outside forces led to the growth of society.
