The Blue rebellion, also known as the Indigo revolt, took place in 1859. Indian farmers rebelled against the British, for forcing them to grow Indigo, instead of food crops. Indigo was in demand in Europe, during those times.
Several thousands of ryots in Bengal stopped cultivating indigo and they made their opposition against growing indigo, very clear to the British. In 1860, the British appointed the ‘Indigo Commission’ to look into this matter. Export of indigo from India, declined drastically in the following years.
