Theodora, born in 500 AD, was the empress of the Byzantine Empire and wife of the emperor Justinian I. She played an important role in his life and her greatest service to him was by helping him retain the throne.
During the Nika riots caused by the warring political factions, Blue and Green, the rebels named one of their own men as the emperor, and sought to overthrow Justinian. When Justinian heard that their palace had been surrounded, he planned to flee along with Theodora and the soldiers loyal to him.
However, Theodora convinced him that dying while still being king was much better than dying while in hiding. Hearing her words, Justinian took heart and ordered his trusted friend, Belisarius, to lead his forces against the rebels.
Theodora passed several important reforms during her lifetime that enabled Justinian to retain popular support with his subjects.
