Answer:

Gravitation attracts masses, resulting in an attractive force. In a liquid, the molecules move quickly and move out of the way of a solid object in the liquid. Hence, a dense solid object will sink if its density is greater than that of the liquid because the liquid is displaced by the object as it moves.

Answer:

Gravitation attracts masses, resulting in an attractive force.

In a liquid, the molecules move quickly and move out of the way of a solid object in the liquid. Hence, a dense solid object will sink if its density is greater than that of the liquid because the liquid is displaced by the object as it moves.

In a solid, the molecules are in fixed positions with respect to each other, bound by interatomic or intermolecular forces. Ao object sitting on top of a solid is attracted by gravity in the same way as in a liquid, but the molecules in the solid don’t move much, if at all, so the object doesn’t sink.

Of course, with a very dense object, there may be some indentation, and some low density solids such as waxes will slowly flow around a very heavy object over time.
