If you cannot draw a line in the direction ofthe force from the point where it is acting through the centre of mass of the body, then it is said tohave amomentaboutthat centre of mass (equal to the product of the magnitude of the force and the smallest perpendicular distance between a line in the direction ofthe force and the centre of mass). A net moment causes arotational acceleration in exactly the same wayas a net force causes a linear acceleration.
