Effects on migrants and on the rural communities they leave of internal, rural-to-urban migration differ according to the type of migrant, the volume of migration, and the nature of the places involved. The economic effects and consequences for migrations are reviewed as are the effects on the places of origin--population effects, economic effects, changes in women's economic roles, remittances, and social effects. Interviews with rural-urban migrants reveal them to be satisfied with their new lives, reporting that their life is better in the city than it was in their home communities. Satisfaction is dependent upon changes in employment and income status and in educational opportunities for children, although improvements in housing, water and electricity services, and nutrition may also influence their attitudes. Some migrants are more satisfied that others with their new lifes. Part of this difference lies in the characteristics of the migrants themselves. Friends and kin offer substantial assistance to migrants. The migration has resulted in the short run in unemployment and underemployment, in strains on the housing and service delivery systems, and in government budget deficits. Despite these problems, migrants have developed numerous innovations and self-help systems, which aid the cities in coping with the influx. In the long run, rural out-migration theoretically can reduce population pressure and enhance labor productivity, incomes, and rural welfare.
