Ans: When we sprinkle water on the ground, it is soon absorbed by the soil. This is because water percolates through the soil. The process in which water passes down slowly through the sol is called percolation of water.

The efforts we can make to increase the rate of percolation of the soil is as follows:

  • Sandy soil is loosely bound due to which it allows water to percolate through it easily.
  • Sandy soil has the best percolation rate.
  • Clay soil had the least percolation rate as it is tightly bound and very fine in texture.
  • Sandy soil allows water to reach the ground water much faster as it does't retain water.
  • Planting more trees can help with retention of water over a given area for longer allowing more water to get percolated.
