Steel is an alloy of iron. It is composed of iron with 0.1 to 1.5 per cent carbon. Iron is not suitable to be used in its pure form because pure iron is very soft and elongates easily when hot. Alloying iron with 0.1 to 1.5 per cent carbon changes the properties of pure iron.
