Answer: Elements that are metals tend to lose electrons and become positively charged ions called cations. Elements that are nonmetals tend to gain electrons and become negatively charged ions called anions. Metals that are located in column 1A of the periodic table form ions by losing one electron.

Metallic elements tend to lose electrons.

  • There are different types of elements which forms either cation or anion by losing or gaining electrons, in order to get the stable structure of the nearest noble gas.
  • Similarly, the metallic elements tend to lose electrons to form cation and to get the structure of the nearest noble gas.
  • On the other hand, the non metallic elements gain electrons and become anion to get the structure of the nearest noble gas.
  • For example, we can take sodium (Na) which has the electronic configuration of (2,8,1) and it lose one electron to gain the electronic configuration of (2,8). This (2,8) electronic configuration is also obtained by neon which is nearest noble gas to the sodium.
