All fire-related energy is chemical bond energy. Charcoal is wood that is first burned in low oxygen to get rid of the water and various stuff (methane, hydrogen, tar, etc.). What's left is pretty much just carbon. So in making charcoal, you are releasing energy by reactions like 2H2+O2 → 2H2O
