Daruwalla is really a master o f many poetic devices, style and techniques,

narration and depiction, free verse, dramatic monologue, traditional prosody,

symbolism and innovative imagery. While dealing with post modem Indian English

poetry one will never ignore the substantial contribution made by this poet. Daruwalla

came in limelight with the publication of his collection of poems called Under Orion

(1970). This collection displays an unmatched poetic talent and individuality, rich in

stylistic and thematic diversity. A number of poems are marked with dramatic tension

generated by curfews, cops, culprits, dacoits, slaughterers, agitators and the like. In a

sense, his poetry is solid picture of bizarre Indian scene.

Daruwalla’s thematic variety is permeated with Indianness. Whatever he

writes about has an inherent presentation of Indian sensibility. His noteworthy poems

like ‘Crossing of Rivers’, ‘The Ghaghra in Spate’, ‘Vignette Poems’, ‘Collages’ and

host of other poems are suffused with Indian sensibility. He very often refers to Hindu

rituals such as pinddan, gayatri mantra, yoga and asana. It is almost accepted fact

that poetry must spring from the specific soil. Poets like Manmohan Ghosh and others

have attempted to extend the western poetic tradition but the quality and component

of Indianness is perceptibly absent in their poetry.
