The event took place at Howick, contributing to the history of Mr Mandela was his arrest on 5th August 1962 after he has started his long walk of freedom. He was arrested on the main Durban-Johannesburg road that falls between Howick and Lidgetton West. Furthermore, Nelson Mandela was awarded "The Freedom of Howick" in December of 1996.
A small plaque was initially commemorated in the honor of Mr Mandela, however, that has been changed to a completely operational monument of Nelson Mandela along with a museum.
There is also an annual Mandela Day Marathon that starts at Imbali, Pietermaritzburg and ends at the capture site of Mr Mandela in Howick.
