In the year 1801, Awadh started a system of subsidiary alliance under the British rule.   The British annexed Awadh on the grounds of misadministration by the Nawab of Awadh.   Sumarry settlement was passed in the year 1856 to reduce percentage of land held by talukdars.   Awadh was a major centre of the Revolution of 1857.
