In 1531 the Spanish explorer Diego de Ordaz voyaged up the river, and that same year another Spanish explorer, Antonio de Berrio, descended the Casanare and Meta rivers and then descended the Orinoco to its mouth. In 1744, Jesuit missionaries reached the Casiquiare River.
