The kingdom could not be able to compete with the rich Islamic neighbors and became poorer.
The kingdom was situated in the north-eastern coastline of Africa.
Though Askum was the important lynchpin in Silk Road connecting the eastern Asia with Europe, Middle East and North Africa, it could not sustain itself.
