Density, compressibility, temperature, "regional" variations such a gradients or layered structure in these parameters, and air currents can bend and/or reflect sound waves. Additionally, complex and massive structures, such as trees can have a profound effect as acoustic absorbers. One can be standing in a dense forest, perhaps in Oregon or Virginia, etc., and find it so totally quiet that the sound of your own pulse becomes almost oppressive.
