There are two factors that determine what state of matter a material will be in: pressure and temperature.Pressure also affects what state of matter a material can be in. For example, at sea level pressure, dry ice (CO2 gas) goes straight from solid to gas, a process called sublimation. However, if you increase the pressure (like in a pressure cooker) then you can have liquid CO2. This is also why pressure cookers exist: they force the water to remain liquid even though it is hotter than boiling point!since we are all familiar with the fact that water can be solid (ice), liquid or gas, we know that materials can change from one state to another. Water's phase changes can be driven by temperature. Heat it up and it goes from solid to liquid, and eventually liquid to gas. Most materials do this in some way.
