refractive index means the ratio of the speed of light of vacuum to that of the speed of the medium . the factors on which the refractive index depend are :

1) the size of the molecules of the medium

2) electrical permittivity

3) and the configuration of the molecules in the medium4

Refractive index depends upon the following :

Optical density

⇒ Refractive index is inversely proportional to the optical density of the medium .

Wavelength

⇒ Refractive index is inversely proportional to the wavelength of the light wave.

Temperature

⇒ Refractive index is inversely proportional to the temperature of the medium.

Hope it helps :-)
