A delta is a triangle land piece that is located at the river mouth. It forms as the river deposits the sediments in its mouth (where a river drains into a sea, ocean, or lake).

Explanation:

  • At the conclusion of the trip, the stream slows down and loses the ability to convey the debris when a river joins a sea / lake. The sediments will be laid at the mouth of the river. A few rivers deposit significant volumes of sand that currents & sea waves are unable to take away. This results in the creation of a delta-forming layers.
  • The balance between the supply of sediments, watershed processes, and the receipt of basin processes which seques, redistributes, and exports these sediments is assessed for delta sizes and shapes. The formation, location and design of the receiving basin are also influencing delta formation.

Hence,  deltas are formed when the river that carries sediment reaches either

  1. a water source such as a ocean, stream, or pool,
  2. another river which can not drain the sediment speedily to avoid   the formation of a delta or
  3. an offshore field in which the water flows and sediment deposits

Delta is formed due to the deposition of sediments and it depends on the rivers speed, carrying capacity etc.

Explanation:

  • Factors that are responsible for the formation of the deltas are those related to the carrying capacity of the sediments by the rivers, the size of the sediments that bulky or heavy, and the inland low regions were the sediments are washed out.
  • Due to the decrease in the flow velocity the flow enters the stagnant water and hence the delta is built on that may take the shape of the birdsfoot, estuary, etc.
