Johnsy was too ill to get out of bed. She could only see the window which was just in front of her bed. She was able to see a cripper of ivy. She used to count its leaves. She had belief that when the all leaves of the tree fall due to the storm, her life will also shed down.
But she was not known that the last leaf of the tree was painted by the old painter described earlier in the chapter. One night there was a heavy storm. She thought that the leaf must have fallen overnight. But to her surprise the leaf was still there. Taking inspiration form the leaf she was encouraged. Later on she became healthy again.
