The Elephant had asked the man on a rainy day to permit him to put his trunk inside his hut so as to protect his trunk from the pouring rain.

EXPLANATION:

The Gentlemen of the Jungle by Jomo Kenyatta tells us the story of a man living alone in the jungle with many animals. This man is tricked by an elephant who pretends to be his comrade and so a controversy starts. The lion, the Jungle king, gives the man the opportunity to make his case before a Commission entirely made up of animals, which ultimately has a questionable impartiality, to the point that the elephant has been declared innocent and the man has to leave his hut and build another one elsewhere.

It happens again and again with the man: the man builds huts which a rhinos, a hyena, leopard, buffalo and other animals successively seizes it. He then decides to take drastic measures, has all the animals gathered in a big hut and then burns the hut completely and he finds himself alone and relaxed, has rid himself of the cruel beasts and is ready to enjoy an expensive peace. The story ends with a moral maxim, "Peace is costly, but it's worth the expense". The author has treated the themes of abuse of power, racism, and injustice, in a colorful, sober, and simple; however, the moral is brilliant and clear .
