Do’s and Don’ts for managing a Nosebleed

While most of us may have experienced nosebleed at some point of time, it may be a more frequent issue for others. Nosebleeds, also known as Epistaxis, can occur randomly. The blood can flow from one or both nostrils and could be light or heavy, sometimes almost lasting up to 10 minutes, too! Getting nosebleeds in public places can become very embarrassing and frightening. In most cases, nosebleeds are often triggered by minor triggers such as common cold, allergies, extreme hot or cold weather, pollen, dry nose and sinusitis. It can also be caused by high blood pressure. Nosebleeds can be dangerous or life threatening only in rare cases such as tumors, Hemangiomas and Telangiectasias. Sometimes, the lack of protein that is necessary for blood clotting can also lead to bleeding disorders like Hemophilia. However, no matter what the reason might be, you should know what needs to be done and what you should avoid in these situations.

Here are the do’s and don’ts you need to follow when your nose starts to bleed.

Do’s:

The first thing that you need to do when your nose starts to bleed is to stay calm. Do not panic.

If the blood has reached your mouth, spit it out.

To stop the nosebleed, sit down, lean forward and pinch the upper part of your nose, just above the nostrils. Continue doing it for at least 10 minutes, without getting tempted to check if the bleeding has ceased. Ask someone to help you keep track of the time. If you are alone, you can use your phone to track the time as well. Now, breathe through your nose while leaning forward. This will drain out the blood that has accumulated inside your nose.

Cover an ice pack with a towel and place it on the bridge of your nose.

Once the bleeding stops, do not lie down. Stay upright and breathe calmly to preventfurther bleeding.

The first aid you should give for bleeding nose is

  • Keep the person upright in a comfortable position with his head held back.
  • Press the bleeding side of the nose firmly.
  • Keep an ice pack or wet cloth on the nose.
  • Ask the patient to breathe through his mouth and not to blow his nose
  • A little bit of bleeding from the nose is harmless but if the bleeding is heavy, send for the doctor.

Hope this helps you well.
