Concept:

  • Hydraulic forces
  • Pressure
  • The pressure on both sides of the hydraulic machine have to be the same.
  • F1/ A1 = F2/ A2

Given:

  • Force 1 F1 = 150N
  • First area of cross-section A1 = 12 cm^2
  • Second area of cross-section A2 = 2 cm^2

Find:

  • The force applied on the piston with the area of cross-section of 2 cm^2, F2

Solution:

The pressure on both sides of the hydraulic machines has to be the same.

F1/ A1 = F2/ A2

F1 A2 = F2 A1

F2 = F1 A2/A1

150 x 2 = F2 x 12

6 * F2 = 150

F2 = 150/ 6 = 25 N

The force applied is 25N.
