Communalism is when one religion is seen as the basis of a nation.

It happens when religion and its followers are pitted against the other.

When the demands of one religion group are formed in a position to the other and when the State Power is used to establish termination of one religious group over the rest.

This is basically called communal politics which is based upon the idea that religion is the principal basis of social community.

It takes various forms in politics :-

  • Firstly, which involve prejudices or stereotypes which results in the superiority of one religion of the other. This is caused by everyday beliefs.

  • Secondly, a communal mind often leads to a quest for political dominance. This forms a majotarian dominance, which suppresses minority community and forms separate political unit.

  • Then political mobilisation starts which involves the use of Sacred symbols. The leaders start emotional appeal in order to bring the followers of one religion together in a political arena.

  • It can also from communal violence and riots. The best example is the suffering of people during partition of India and Pakistan.
