Written communication is used to indicate informed consent. The subjects of the study will typically receive an information packet containing everything they need to know to be informed about their participation of the study. They will then sign a form stating that they have received the material, understand the study and what is expected of them, and they agree to participate after having been made aware of everything the study involves. If a minor is participating in the study, their parent or guardian must be present to receive all the information and sign the form on the child's behalf. Special considerations have to be made if the participant is illiterate. They would then be given the information verbally and might either sign the form after it was read to them, or they might give their permission verbally on tape. However, the typical form of communication for informed consent is written.
