When the capacitor is provided with a voltage on both ends, a potential difference occurs between the plates and electric fields are formed.Thus it separates positive charge and negative charge. And in doing so energy is stored as electric potential. This mechanism is entirely different from charging a battery(where the chemical composition changes). It is a pretty high level stuff
