In Act 2 scene 2, Gratiano asks Bassanio if he could accompany him to Belmont, Bassanio agrees to allow him on the ship if he had some business if he was willing to moderate or allay his skipping spirit and his liberal voice with some cold drops of humbleness and kindness.

Later in Belmont, the following happens,

Gratiano had ,after swearing  until the very roof of his mouth was dry and after saying oaths of love until he sweated again, managed to get a promise of love and marriage from Nerissa provided Bassanio had won the mistress and heiress of Belmont, Portia, as his wife. As Bassanio had successfully won Portia through the lottery of caskets, he had won Nerissa's hand in marriage, Bassanio and Portia both are very happy to have their marriage at the same time as theirs.

Gratiano is irritated by the loss of Antonio's ships and Shylock still being just as stringent, stubborn and spiteful as he had been earlier in insisting on extracting the forfeiture. He is disillusioned by Shylocks mercilessness and says that Shylock made him waiver and be uncertain in his own faith and made him want to believe that when Shylock was in his unholy mother's womb, the spirit of a wolf hung for man slaughter had infused itself in him, causing all his wishes to be so wolfish, starved and ravenous.
