Green revolution gave a new direction to Punjab agriculture

The Green Revolution refers to a set of research oriented developmental technology that took place between 1950 and the late 1960s, that helped in the increase of agricultural production worldwide.

The revolution helped in the adoption of new technologies, including high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of cereals, especially dwarf wheat and rices, along with chemical fertilizers and agro-chemicals, irrigation facilities and new methods of cultivation, including mechanization.

Punjab due to its reliable water supply and a history of agricultural success  was chosen by the Indian government to be the first state in India to try the new crops.
