What gave the British an opportunity to start gaining control over India?
though the first formal mention of British East India Company was in 1600 Charter but the BEIC started gaining immense foothold in indian subcontinent during the later 18th century esp after Battle. of Plassey (1757) and Buxar (1764).. and there are many reasons
1. Political
India during 18th century was a vast land marred by warring powers.. marathas were on ascendancy, mughals were deteriorating and, there was rise of successor states like Hyderabad under Asaf jah, Awadh under Shuja ud daulah and Bengal under alivardi khan and quli qutub khan were asserting their independence.. this made British a power to. reckon with as many powers used them as balance against one another. eg Carnatic wars, civil war among marathas etc.
2. Economic
india was a huge producer and supplier of spices, cotton and other exorbitant agricultural produce along with famed silk etc. this gave huge market for. indian goods in Europe. So mostly western European companies found immense potential in indian trade (read about Britain's triangular opium trade) also recall. items like Tea for which darjeeling and brahmaputra plains were the most ideal places.
Also Britain had developed a Large Banking System which had great economic capacity and had much greater leverage than what traditional banking families of india had
