Nazi ideology was built around scientific racism, a now discredited practice that used scientific methods of measurement and observation to draw conclusions about supposed differences between human racial groups. Nazis saw ethnic Germans as part of a master race of Aryans, or Nordics, while emphasizing the inferiority of other races. Nazis therefore sought to unite Germans across Europe and remove the influence of ''inferior'' groups, especially Jews, while at the same time gaining lebensraum or living space for Aryans. These goals resulted in the Holocaust, the systematic slaughter of six million Jews, Roma, ethnic Poles, Slavs, homosexuals, and people of African dissent. Before being defeated in World War II in 1945, the Nazis succeeded in killing two thirds of the Jewish population of Europe.
