Living in the Victorian Workhouse - Until 1834, the poor were looked after with the income from landowners and other wealthy people and food and clothing was bought for the poor. Workhouses were where poor people who had no job or home lived. Through doing jobs in the workhouses the poor earned a living.
Explanation:
- Prior to 1830 the poor assistance was generally a parish affair. Local church parishes took on the responsibility of caring for such people by finding jobs for the able-bodied people and providing house for the very poor and weak people
- From 1601, this responsibility was given to parishes by way of a poor law that needed the cost of caring to be paid for by tax on those who occupied or owned property in that area (known as rate payer). The cost of caring continued to rise steeply over the next few years and as the number of poor started increasing taxpayers became discontented with the situation.
- And the situation got worst with the Enclosure Act of the 18th Century and the movement of poor farmers and labourers to cities, thereby the cost of feeding the poor rose astronomically. The cost taking care of the poor in Wales and England was around 4 million pounds in 1803 and by 1818 if had doubled to 8 million pounds
- Thus, the cost of caring of the poor in such workhouses had doubled in a very short span of time. This was mainly because of people shifting from farming communities to the cities since the land that they had farmed on had been enclosed by the landowners. Developments such as the industrial and increase in population also took place
