This is a question on reduction.

When steam is passed over the red hot iron the red hot iron reduces the steam to hydrogen gas.

A mixture of iron oxide is also formed .

That is Iron (ii) Oxide and Iron (iii) Oxide

The equation can be written as :

3Fe(s) + 4H₂O(g) ----------->Fe₃O₄(s) + 4H₂(g)

The Fe₃O₄ is a mixed oxide of iron (FeO . Fe₂O₃).

This mixture is the magnetite of the Iron.

Therefore when steam is passed over heated iron the steam is reduced to hydrogen gas whereas the magnetite of the iron is formed.
