If an iron is kept in dry cloth for more than 48 hours, the rusting process won't start. Rusting won't happen because one of the prerequisites for starting the rusting processes is missing. This means that because one condition is not met, moisture is not available, but oxygen is. That is the absence of moisture is the result of nail iron not rusting in dry cloth.

  • However, if an iron nail is left in touch with a moist cloth for 48 hours, the rusting process begins.
  • The nail eventually completely disintegrates, leaving just a powdery imprint. All of this is brought about by a chemical reaction between the iron in the nail and the dissolved oxygen in the water it comes into contact with.
  • Oxidation leads to rusting. Rust is produced when iron combines with oxygen and water to form hydrated iron(III) oxide.
