The British began to forcefully endorse the Khasis as laborer's in construction. This enraged the Khasis who organized a revolt against the British under the leadership of Tiruth Singh, a Khasi chief. This revolt continued for four years and finally suppressed by the British.
Jaintia tribals broke into revolt against the British when, stamp duty and house tax were imposed. Such taxes were new to them and they lost their freedom to the British. This enraged them and they revolted which lasted from 1860 to 1863.
