If they do not lose water then transpiration will not take place.

  • Transpiration is a physiological process, because it is a metabolic activity that takes place within plants that is a living system.
  • It is the natural method of a plant absorbing water from its roots, moving it along its tissues, and expelling vapour via its leaves
  • It is the process of water loss from the plant's stomata in the form of water vapour.
  • Thus, if aerial parts of plant don't lose water, then transpiration will not take place.

If aerial parts of plants do not lose water in the form of water vapour, there will be no transpiration and plants will die.

The loss of water vapour from the aerial parts of a plant, like leaves, is called transpiration. It takes place through openings in the leaf membrane called stomata.

Here is what can happen in the absence of transpiration:

1. Transpiration causes an upward suction that in turn causes an upward pressure. It is because of this pressure that water is taken up by the plants. In the absence of this pressure, no absorption of water and nutrients (with the water) will take place. The plants will not get necessary nutrients for growth and will die.

2. Plants will not be able to stay upright. It is the water pressure that helps them stay upright. In the absence of water, plants wilt and start falling to one side.

3. Suppose that water absorption is still taking place, in the absence of transpiration plants will end up with excess water and will eventually burst and die.
