We all are well known with the fact that sodium is kept/preserved in kerosene so as to avoid its direct contact with the air. This is due to the high reactivity of Na metal in the air.
Sodium is a soft metal and we can easily cut it with a knife. Sodium gives out a vigorous reaction when comes in contact with humidity/water molecules.
The reaction is:
2Na+2H2O→2NaOH+H22Na+2H2O→2NaOH+H2
When sodium reacts with water, sodium hydroxide is formed hydrogen gas as a byproduct that gets burnt with a bright flame….making the reaction highly exothermic.
The solution formed after the reaction is basic in nature due to the dissolution of NaOH in water.
