onsciousness is a property of brain and loses its existence with the brain death.
Just like pumping of blood stops as soon as heart stops functioning, there is no consciousness after brain death. This hypothesis has evolved with time, considering the fact that cognitive science had dualist approach when started originally by Descartes. There are many versions of dualism but the main essence of all of them is presence of two separate entities to constitute consciousness. One entity being physical, dependent on the brain anatomy, condition; other entity being the non-materialistic entity which is our self-being. According to dualism, this non-materialistic entity survives death. However most of the modern cognitive scientists have moved on from dualism to a materialistic model of consciousness. Modern science has shown that different areas of brain are responsible for different functions like language, speech, emotions, humor, etc. So, its all neurons and their billions of connections which makes up to what we know as consciousness. After death, neurons stop firing. So, natural conclusion is there is no consciousness after death.
