As we switch the lamp on, the pupil shrinks in order to avoid damage to cornea. As the light entering into the eyes were initially dim but as strong light (from the lamp) entered the eyes, iris changed the size of the pupil, just to protect the cornea.

when we switch the lamp on or when we look at a source of bright light then our pupil becomes smaller in size or contracts. this is because iris controls pupil and amount of light entering the eye and vice-versa will happen in case of a dark place.
