Burning of a candle needs continuous supply of oxygen present in the air. By covering the candle with a jar,the supply of oxygen gets cut and as there is only limited quantity of oxygen left the candle burns for a moment then goes off completely. Since there is no oxygen left in the jar.

when a jar is placed on a candle it stops burning because oxygen supply is cutted. oxygen is needed to burner candle
