When electricity is passed through a concentrated solution of sodium chloride(brine solution).it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide,chlorine & hydrogen:

Eqn :

2NaCl (aq) + 2H2O (l)----------2NaOH(aq) + Cl2(g) + H2 (g)

This process is called chlor-alkali process
